What are primitive reflexes?

Primitive reflexes are automatic movements babies are born with—like the startle reflex or grasp reflex. These reflexes help with early survival and development, but they’re meant to fade away as a child’s brain matures. The purpose is to master these reflexes and build upon them so we can make room for higher levels of learning.

Occupational Therapist, Bree Milani, gives an overview of Primitive Reflex Integration and the role it has on child development. As well as home exercises to help integrate retained reflexes.

Why It Matters if They Don’t Go Away

Sometimes, primitive reflexes don’t fully integrate or become fully automatic, and when that happens, they can interfere with:

  • Motor coordination

  • Posture and balance

  • Focus and attention

  • Sensory processing

  • Emotional regulation

Kids might look fidgety, have trouble sitting still, struggle with handwriting, struggle catching a ball, feel overwhelmed easily, or have poor body awareness—all signs that retained reflexes might be getting in the way.

Why Reflex Integration Is Important in OT

  • Builds a Strong Foundation for Learning

  • Improves Motor Skills

  • Supports Emotional and Behavioral Regulation

  • Boosts Sensory Processing

  • Encourages Independence and Confidence

Primitive reflex integration is like clearing out “old software” in the brain and body, so kids can run better “programs” for learning, moving, and thriving. It’s a gentle but powerful part of sensory-based OT that can help unlock a child’s full potential.
