Did you know?
Our bodies actually have 9 sensory systems, not 5! Interesting right? Find out how these 9 systems help us not only to interpret what’s going on around us, but also what’s going on within us. Understanding how these systems impact our interactions, behaviors, and regulation is key to understanding how we can help our bodies function better in our daily routines.
Occupational Therapist, Bree Milani, gives an overview of our 9 sensory systems and how they help our bodies function. As well as the impact of Occupational Therapy in helping to support children with Sensory Processing Disorder or Difficulties.
Our bodies have 9 Sensory Systems
These systems help us interpret information from the outside world as well as our internal experiences.
Difficulties with sensory processing can lead to emotional outbursts, difficulty with regulation, playing too rough, bumping into people or things in the room, difficulty paying attention, trouble focusing when there’s noise in the room, difficulty tolerating a variety of clothing, difficulty with potty training past age 5, and so much more.
Occupational Therapy can help us understand how our child’s sensory and nervous systems are functioning and how we can help support them so that they can engage in play, school, social, family and so many other interactions.
